Report: ByteDance's Zhang Yiming Rejects Distilling US Models for Short-Term Gains

AGI Hunt · wechat · 2026-08-05

ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming stated at an internal Seed team meeting that the company will not take shortcuts by distilling US frontier models, even if it means temporarily lagging behind competitors. This stance comes as Chinese models like Kimi rapidly close the gap with US counterparts.

Anthropic previously accused several Chinese firms of distilling Claude, but ByteDance was not named. ByteDance's own Seed-Evolving model currently trails the top tier, potentially a conscious choice for long-term compliance and autonomy.
