Stanford Hazy Research: AI Agents Are Driving Traditional CUDA Abstractions Toward Retirement

The Stanford Hazy Research team argues that with the advancement of AI coding agents, traditional CUDA Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) and complex C++ abstractions are heading toward retirement.
Last year, when writing megakernels, the team still relied on complex abstraction layers to ease cognitive load. However, this year, while building an MoE megakernel, they deleted the abstractions entirely. Modern AI agents can now handle underlying complexity directly, generating highly optimized code from scratch based on incomplete, messy ideas within prompts. The authors suggest that the role of abstractions as "cognitive offloaders" is being taken over by agents.
