MIT Survey: Only 9% of Enterprises Have Assigned Accountability for AI Agents

A survey by MIT CISR of 132 enterprises reveals a significant gap in AI agent adoption. While 34% of respondents are actively using 'digital colleagues,' only 9% have established where accountability lies for their output. This means roughly a quarter of enterprises have agents doing consequential work without a clear owner.
Furthermore, only 22% have redesigned workflows around agents, and fewer than one in five have done the necessary organizational work. Respondents expect a 25% increase in revenue per employee within three years.
The author argues that the term 'digital colleague' is misleading, pulling focus toward org charts and headcount math, when the actual requirement is deep 'process surgery' to fundamentally restructure business operations.
