While the AI debate often focuses on raw model capabilities, practical diffusion and real-world impact are equally crucial. In Ghana, an AI math tutor named Rori, running via WhatsApp, demonstrates how AI can transform education.
Accessible on a $20 phone, students interact with Rori like any contact, solving math problems in natural language with step-by-step hints. A peer-reviewed randomized controlled trial showed that students using it a few times a week gained roughly an extra year of math learning (0.36 SD).
This impact costs only about $5 per student annually. The success is largely driven by deliberate product design decisions rather than just underlying model power.
