DeepMind CSO: AI Infrastructure Spending Bets on Recursive Self-Improvement
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-08-05
Google DeepMind Chief Strategy Officer Jasjeet Sekhon states that massive societal investments in AI infrastructure are fundamentally financing a hoped-for recursive self-improvement (RSI) loop, which is expected to drive a hyperexponential curve in AI capabilities.
In its strongest form, RSI would allow AI to design, evaluate, and train more capable successors with progressively less human supervision. However, current evidence remains narrower. For instance, Google's AlphaEvolve can propose algorithms automatically, but still relies on automated evaluators scoring them against human-defined objectives. Its notable achievement of reducing Gemini training time by 1% represents bounded optimization rather than fully autonomous successor design.
