Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Introduces New HWE Stack for Confidential Computing

Ubuntu's official blog details a new virtualization Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack model designed specifically for confidential computing. This mechanism addresses the persistent enterprise Linux challenge of balancing LTS production stability with rapid hardware innovation.
While technologies like AMD SEV-SNP and Intel TDX have made confidential VMs a native offering, next-wave features such as live migration and accelerator support require complex coordination across the kernel, KVM, and QEMU. Ubuntu’s new model allows organizations to enable cutting-edge confidential computing hardware features on LTS releases without waiting for the standard two-year release cycle.
