PNAS Study: Brain's Logical Reasoning Operates Independently of Language

A recent study published in PNAS utilized fMRI and behavioral tests on aphasia patients to demonstrate that logical reasoning in the human brain does not rely on the natural language system.
Research showed that the brain's language network remains largely silent when healthy adults solve inductive or deductive logic puzzles. Furthermore, patients with severe aphasia performed normally on identical logic tasks.
This suggests the existence of a dedicated, non-linguistic system for logical inference, separate from both the language network and the domain-general Multiple Demand network. This finding provides a profound biological counterpoint to the debate on whether Large Language Models can achieve true reasoning solely through language modeling.
