Jensen Huang on Open vs. Closed AI: Closed Is Cheaper, Open Is About Sovereignty

Jensen Huang recently reframed the debate between open and closed AI models, stating they answer different questions rather than competing.
He pointed out that closed models are actually cheaper. Although open weights are free, the total cost of fine-tuning, maintaining, guardrailing, evaluating, and hosting the infrastructure is massive. Therefore, closed models will and should serve the vast majority of users who simply need the intelligence to work.
Conversely, the core reason to choose open models is "control," not savings. For specialized sectors like hospitals, defense contractors, and research labs that need tailored solutions, owning the model is the only way to avoid dependency on a provider's pricing, guardrails, or availability.
He emphasized that both worlds will coexist: closed models make intelligence universally usable, while open weights act as a permanent floor that keeps closed providers honest and ensures civilization retains the ability to build its own AI.
