Google Earth Pauses AI Feature After Disinformation Nightmare
nordicinst · x · 2026-08-04
Google Earth recently introduced a feature allowing users to overlay AI-generated images onto satellite maps of any location. However, the tool was immediately abused, triggering a severe disinformation crisis, according to The Guardian.
Researchers and testers exploited the tool to create highly misleading images, such as faking refugee surges at the US-Mexico border, "planting" a nuclear plant in Iran, and creating a fake bomb crater near a hospital in Gaza. Facing these easily bypassed safety limitations, Google has paused the AI image generation feature.
