New Calibration Method Matches MIRT in Multidimensional Parameter Estimation at Lower Cost

The author shared progress from a two-year research project exploring whether EGA (Exploratory Graph Analysis) can estimate multidimensional item parameters without relying on factor analysis or MIRT.

A new "Directional Minimum-Distance" calibration method was developed to solve this. Results from the first half of a large Monte Carlo simulation (4,000 datasets) show that under EGA's native framework, the fully empirical pipeline recovered multidimensional discrimination and difficulty almost identically to MIRT. It also achieved perfect optimization and dimensional recovery success while dramatically lowering computational costs.
