Expressive Robots Trigger Hormonal Changes, But Errors Cause Harder Trust Collapse

A Drexel University study explored how socially interactive humanoid robots alter human hormones. Participants interacted with two versions of the Pepper robot: one with eye contact, nodding, and gestures, and the other with almost no body language.
- Trust Build and Collapse: The expressive robot built trust faster. However, once it started interrupting or offering illogical suggestions, trust collapsed harder. Brains treated these errors as social norm violations rather than technical glitches.
- Hormonal Response: Oxytocin levels rose during the interaction, which researchers interpreted as a vigilance signal rather than a sign of bonding.
The findings suggest that when designing social robots for healthcare, customer service, education, and home settings, reliability must come first. Without reliability, looking more human only sharpens disappointment.
