In the ongoing lawsuit where Apple accused OpenAI of stealing hardware secrets, OpenAI has released messages that add a dramatic twist.
Records disclosed by OpenAI indicate that weeks after engineer Chang Liu left Apple, employees were still privately asking him to locate internal files, explain product decisions, and assist with technical questions. One employee even messaged him saying he was "the best" despite no longer working there. Furthermore, OpenAI claims Apple falsely stated they had contacted them; in reality, Apple's outside counsel mistakenly thanked OpenAI's General Counsel for a phone call that never occurred and later apologized.
While this doesn't disprove Apple's broader trade-secret allegations, it puts Apple on the defensive, forcing the company to explain its offboarding failures and why its employees continued to seek confidential help from someone they accuse of stealing secrets.
