Enterprise AI Pain Point: Switching Costs Outweigh Model Performance Gaps

The author points out that although leaderboards like Artificial Analysis rank Chinese models behind, a 3-9 month gap is often shorter than the time it takes a mid-market enterprise to complete security reviews, legal compliance, and vendor risk assessments.
What truly determines enterprise adoption is switching cost. Many current AI stacks have the model deeply welded in at dozens of places: prompts tuned to a specific vendor, evals written against one output format, and guardrails living in the vendor's console.
Furthermore, for regulated buyers, there's a sensitive issue: the credible open-weight options for on-prem deployment are now mostly Chinese. This is no longer just a procurement problem but a governance conversation that CIOs will be forced to tackle this quarter.
