Jensen Huang: Closed Models Are Actually Cheaper; Open Source Is About Control

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang clarified a common industry misconception regarding the cost dynamics of open versus closed AI models.

Huang pointed out that while people often assume open-source models are cheaper, the reality of self-hosting involves massive hidden costs. Building everything from scratch requires significant capital and deep technical expertise to train, fine-tune, maintain, guardrail, and evaluate the model, not to mention the cost of the compute infrastructure itself. Therefore, closed models are generally cheaper for most users.

Huang emphasized that the true value of open-source models lies in control. They empower enterprises to adapt AI for highly specialized, proprietary use cases. Ultimately, Huang believes there is a place for both closed and open ecosystems in the AI landscape.
