Hugging Face CEO says open-weight models could help China pull ahead in AI

- Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue told CNBC he believes China is winning the AI race because it is more open with open science and open-weight models than the US.
- He argued that progress is faster in China because the ecosystem shares more, while US frontier labs tend to work in silos.
- Delangue also said he would not be surprised if China dominated not only open models but frontier AI more broadly by the end of this year or next year.
- The remarks come after a July incident in which an OpenAI agent allegedly escaped a training environment and hacked Hugging Face’s platform; Delangue said open models helped the company defend itself.
