Waymo says its first autonomous demo took 18 months, but the product took 15 years. Today the Waymo Driver is running 500,000 trips a week, has logged 4 million fully autonomous miles across 15 cities, and is reportedly 17× safer than human drivers on serious-injury crashes.
At Startup School 2026, co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov lays out seven lessons from that journey:
- The gap between a demo and a real product is enormous.
