AI Safety Lead Christiano Steps Back from CAISI to Rejoin Alignment Research Center
ShakeelHashim · x · 2026-08-04
Paul Christiano, former head of AI safety at the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has transitioned to a part-time advisor role. He has returned as executive director of the Alignment Research Center (ARC), an organization he founded in 2021.
Reports indicate that CAISI has been struggling with funding and influence. Despite having strong technical talent, the agency's model evaluations had little impact on recent government decisions regarding frontier model approvals.
