Compound Launches Headless Excel Engine for Asynchronous Mass Processing

Compound detailed an Excel Agent architecture based on a headless engine. Unlike traditional add-ins (like Claude in Excel) that require Excel to remain open, this engine allows users to process countless workbooks in parallel.
This architecture enables users to trigger agent tasks from their phones while at the beach, realizing a 100x asynchronous future for knowledge work. To build this, the team evaluated the open-source Rust engine IronCalc, and after finding it lacking, utilized multiple agentic loops to write over 800,000 lines of Rust code, successfully optimizing it to match Excel values across hundreds of thousands of files and significantly increasing speed.
