SMPL-X C++ Plugin for UE5.8 dramatically speeds up 3D human body rendering
Michael_J_Black · x · 2026-08-03
To address the slow forward rendering pass caused by dense pose correctives in SMPL-X and related models, Joachim Tesch from MPI developed the new SMPL C++ Plugin for Unreal Engine 5.8.
The plugin delivers accurate skin deformations more efficiently at runtime, allowing for the simultaneous rendering of numerous SMPL-X bodies. It features optional Level-of-Detail (LOD) settings that automatically disable pose correctives as a character occupies fewer pixels, increasing the frame rate without a noticeable loss in visual quality. The plugin is released under an MIT license.
