400+ Voice AI Vendors Chase a Shrinking Pie: Telecom Data Reveals True Call Volumes
chadwallacehart · x · 2026-08-03
More than 400 dedicated Voice AI vendors now offer speech-to-speech agents with phone-interaction capabilities, including at least 175 startups founded in the last three years.
The author analyzed telecom regulator data to quantify actual Minutes of Use (MoU) and assess market demand:
- In Austria, Germany, and the UK, app-based online communications (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Teams) account for 1.4×–2.4× as many minutes as regulated calling.
- Per capita regulated voice usage has dropped 7%–18% since 2023, but total calling volume remained mostly flat in 2024, indicating calls are migrating rather than disappearing.
- India records the highest calling minutes per person globally.
