Rewriting Bioinformatics Tool pydREG with Claude & Codex

anshulkundaje · x · 2026-08-03

Researchers successfully ported the popular dREG peak calling method into Python (pydreg) using Claude and Codex. dREG is an analysis tool for nascent transcriptomics (e.g., GRO/PRO-seq data).

Acting as an inference-only port of the original R package, pydreg achieves significant performance improvements: a 3.4x speed-up and a 4-7x reduction in memory usage on an NVIDIA P100 GPU. This highlights the potential of AI coding assistants in modernizing legacy scientific software.
