Dev Rants: Stop Posting <5% Benchmark Gains on <100 Samples
xeophon · x · 2026-08-03
Developer @xeophon took to X to vent frustration over the statistical flaws plaguing AI model evaluations. He threatened to "lose his mind" if he saw one more benchmark result on his timeline showing less than a 5% difference based on an average of fewer than 100 samples.
This highlights a growing fatigue within the AI community regarding benchmark hacking. Many models or methods are heavily promoted based on micro-improvements in mean scores that are derived from extremely small sample sizes, rendering the results statistically insignificant and practically meaningless.
