SK hynix Revenue Surpasses TSMC? Expert Says Memory is Simpler Than Logic

Regarding the buzz over SK hynix generating more revenue than TSMC, an expert attributes this to the explosion of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) driven by AI compute demand. However, they emphasize that memory and logic chip manufacturing are not directly comparable in complexity.
In terms of Back-End-Of-Line (BEOL) metal layers, DRAM has less than one-third the layers of logic chips. This means logic chip manufacturing is significantly more complex, and the current memory boom does not represent a fundamental shift in the overall semiconductor manufacturing landscape.
