SpiRobs: Bio-inspired Soft Tentacle Robots for Versatile Grasping

lukas_m_ziegler · x · 2026-08-02

SpiRobs are soft robots inspired by octopus arms and elephant trunks. Designed with a logarithmic spiral structure, they are driven and controlled using simple cables.

The design is highly scalable, ranging from centimeters to meters in size, and can adapt to grasp objects of various shapes. A mini version can function as a tiny precision gripper, while larger versions can be mounted on drones. Furthermore, multiple SpiRobs units can collaborate to wrap around and hold large objects.
