Countering the recent panic that AI will make human mathematicians obsolete, the author argues that AI will actually make them more leveraged and employable. New tools will help them explore mathematical ideas more deeply and translate them into practical applications.
The author suggests that AI companies angling for giant IPOs benefit from spreading despair, yet lack deep ties to long-term science. A tremendous new scientific discipline will emerge focused on making AI-generated results comprehensible, reproducible, and cost-effective, requiring motivated human talent. Thus, there is plenty of meaningful work for a full generation of scientists and mathematicians today.
