Scholar Pushes Back on AI Misinformation Doom: Consumption, Not Production, Is the Bottleneck

Oxford researcher Felix Simon argues that while generative AI increases the supply of false information, this only matters if there is unmet demand. Citing research from Harvard Kennedy School, he emphasizes that the bottleneck in misinformation spread is consumption, not production.
He adds that while AI lowers the barrier for creating fakes, it also leads to 'indexical discounting,' where people no longer automatically trust content just because it looks or sounds real.
