Autonomous Vehicle Safety Testing Expanded: 7 New Pedestrian Behavior Archetypes

Taorui Huang · hf · 2026-07-31

Accurately simulating complex pedestrian behavior is crucial for autonomous vehicle safety testing. Building upon 12 previously defined pedestrian archetypes (e.g., Wanderer, Drunk, Distracted), researchers analyzed YouTube dash-cam videos to identify and define 7 new pedestrian archetypes.

These new archetypes capture observable and significant behavioral patterns that could not be fully explained by the original taxonomy. The paper introduces each new archetype, defines its essential and optional behaviors, differentiates it from previous ones, and provides video-frame evidence.
