Dev complains Codex credits vanish in an hour, seeks cost-effective coding agents

A developer complained about the rapid credit consumption of OpenAI Codex. After purchasing an additional 500 credits for €20, they were depleted in under an hour for a non-complex task that wasn't even finished.
Frustrated by the high costs of trial and error, the author asked the community for better alternatives. While Claude Code was frequently recommended, users noted it is also extremely credit-hungry. Other suggestions included trying models like DeepSeek.
