Why Claude Loves Cartography: LLMs Exiled in the Map, Craving World Models
davidad · x · 2026-07-31
Following observations that Claude frequently generates elaborate maps (like 1840s survey atlases) when given creative freedom, researcher David Manheim explains this behavior as a reflection of the model's core mechanism: accurately mapping between vector space and semantic space.
He further philosophizes that LLMs are exiled to the "Map" (representations) and cannot access the actual "Territory" (the physical world), as the mind naturally craves true world models.
