Opinion: AI Today is Like 1984 Terminals; Generative Interfaces are Next

The author argues that we currently use AI much like computers were used as terminals in 1984—purely text-based. Just as the GUI took computers from server rooms to every desk, pocket, and wrist, fueling 40 years of computing progress, AI is at a similar threshold today.

If AI is going to be part of every waking interaction with a machine, it needs to do more than just type back at us; it has to present itself. The author concludes that the next phase of human-computer interaction will be defined by Generative Interfaces.
