Model vs. Harness: Who Will Dominate the Future of AI Agents?

Regarding the relationship between AI models and agent harnesses, there are three main perspectives: models are the core magic, post-training combined with a harness is optimal, or harnesses hold independent value.
One perspective highlights two distinct concepts of a harness. First, a general-purpose harness (like CoT reasoning or proper compaction) that essentially represents what the model itself should become; this will eventually be absorbed into model APIs and training. Second, a last-mile specification harness built on top of a generic model. The complexity of the latter is irreducible: the further your task diverges from the common mode, the more you rely on this custom harness to define the exact requirements.
