The author dissects Elon Musk's claim that Tesla's Optimus will be the biggest product ever. Historically, all products (drills, cars, phones) shipped incomplete—they acted as leverage requiring a human operator to function.
Optimus is framed as the first product that arrives with the operator already inside. Its true disruption lies in pricing: it doesn't compete against other physical goods, but directly against human wages. Labor is the largest line item on earth and the only cost technology hasn't driven down. If successful, Optimus enters the oldest, largest, and previously unchallenged market of human labor, effectively selling human hours back to us.
