1,268 employees from frontier AI companies have signed a public statement requesting the U.S. government to support an international effort to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.
The statement highlights that leading AI companies believe they are close to automating AI research, posing significant risks of systems accelerating beyond human control. Due to intense competitive pressure, companies and countries cannot unilaterally slow down, requiring government intervention to develop technical and governance tools to buy time for safety measures.
