1,100+ Frontier AI Employees Petition Washington to Slow Down Development

technextpreneur · x · 2026-07-30

Over 1,132 employees, including top scientists from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta, signed a public statement titled "Pacing the Frontier," urging the US government to sponsor an international effort to deliberately pace frontier AI development.

The signatories argue that since no single company or country can afford to slow down unilaterally, the industry needs enforced governance machinery. Anthropic backed this request with its own data showing that over 80% of the code merged into its codebase is now written by AI, arguing that this AI-driven acceleration is exactly why the option to pause must exist. The move is seen as a tacit admission that voluntary self-restraint is failing.
