A long analysis argues that AWS’s June 30 moves and July AGI Lab closure were one strategic decision: spend $1 billion on forward-deployed engineers embedded inside customer companies while retiring products like Kendra, Q Business, and Bedrock Agents. The thesis is that Amazon chose to own the AI layer it can price, rather than the one it could build internally as a frontier lab.

What changed

AWS announced a $1B investment in a new forward-deployed engineering org.
Engineers will work in small pods inside customer companies for roughly 45 days.
AWS also retired about 20 services and features, including Kendra, Q Business, and Bedrock Agents.
Three weeks later, Amazon closed its San Francisco AGI Lab and cut roles in the AGI org.

The interpretation

The article says Amazon is moving money to the bottom and top of the stack:

Bottom: infrastructure, chips, robotics, satellites, and capital expenditure.
Top: customer-embedded engineering teams that help companies build agentic systems on their own data.
Middle: products and internal labs that no longer fit the strategy get cut.
