A cryptography researcher says a non-public AI tool recently solved a longstanding theory problem he cares about.
He adds that the result is sobering rather than a dramatic breakthrough: these tools are getting better, and in two fertile areas — reduced-round AES attacks and his own theory problem — there was still room for progress because not enough people had been working on them.
