AI Agent phones are shifting the battle from apps to permissions
This long piece argues that AI phones are moving from “tap less” convenience to a deeper fight over who becomes the user’s default agent. It compares three product routes:
- Vertical integration by Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi and other handset makers, where hardware, OS, accounts and ecosystem are already controlled in-house.
- Model-company + ODM builds from scratch, such as STEPX Neo, which can iterate quickly but must rebuild brand and distribution.
- Model-company + phone-brand partnerships, where the agent is embedded into the system; most remain at basic AI features, while some, like Doubao + Nubia, go further into system permissions and task execution.
The article argues that the real core asset is permission: the phone is the most complete digital identity carrier, and AI agents need to know who the user is, what has happened, and how to act on the user’s behalf. The next big metrics may be how many tasks the phone completes, not how long users stay on screen.
It also highlights the first high-frequency use cases—delivery tracking, ride-hailing, food ordering, photo search, scheduling, voice-note cleanup and repeated form filling—and warns that system-level agents create new security risks. Citing recent mobile-agent research, it notes prompt-injection-like attacks, screen deception and permission abuse can succeed even with low-privilege malicious apps.
Finally, the piece says the biggest beneficiaries may be non-power users: older adults, visually impaired users and people who struggle with smartphone interfaces. For them, an agent phone is less a gadget upgrade than a translation layer between complex apps and real-world needs.
