AI employees urge governments to build tools for “pacing” frontier AI
A new open letter from AI company employees asks the US government to back an international effort to build the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately slow, or “pace,” frontier AI development.
The letter frames frontier AI as a coordination problem:
- Many insiders think advanced AI could become dangerous soon.
- They also think society is not ready.
- But unilateral slowdown is seen as costly, because competitors may keep racing ahead.
The signatories include chief scientists from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, plus OpenAI’s chief research officer and Google DeepMind’s VP for AI safety.
