A developer expressed a bearish outlook on AI progress, arguing that current developments are diverging from the thesis that scaling up training continuously unlocks broad new capabilities.
The author points out that recent models have become less general rather than more. This is most evident in the degradation of their language outputs compared to earlier models like o3. If these models were truly gaining generalist capacities, they should be able to articulate their reasoning processes increasingly well.
