He points to startup booms after major platform shifts: thousands of social networks after Facebook, thousands of photo apps after Instagram, and the much larger burst of companies after the internet and mobile waves.

His takeaway for founders is to stop copying the obvious trend and look for the next wave while others still dismiss it as a toy. He says the key question is: what cluster of companies is forming right now?
