India can assemble a finished chip in Sanand, but the core still comes from abroad
A thread about a new plant in Sanand, Gujarat says India has reached the point where a finished computer chip can be assembled locally. But the accompanying chip-package diagram makes the larger limitation clear: almost all of the important internals are still imported.
The post frames the chip as a snapshot of India’s semiconductor progress and its gaps at the same time:
- the chip is finished in India
- the package contains 17 dies and 70 bonded wires
- the core of the device remains almost entirely imported
The point is less about a single factory win than about how much of the semiconductor stack India still does not control.
