Lynn Conway’s career at IBM Research was derailed in 1968 after the company’s medical director informed the CEO that she planned to transition; she was fired the same day. She lost her job, financial stability, and, after the divorce that followed, access to her children.
She rebuilt her life under a new identity and later joined Xerox PARC, where she and Carver Mead developed the simplified chip-design methodology now known as Mead-Conway design. The approach made chip layout accessible to ordinary engineers and helped found the modern silicon design industry. Conway later described the broader pattern of credit drifting to men as the “Conway effect,” akin to the Matilda effect. IBM formally apologized in 2020, 52 years later.
