Study says AI coding gains may depend more on project size than on the model

An academic article argues that the productivity gains people see from AI coding tools may depend heavily on project scale and organizational constraints.
The study found that large, mature open-source projects have shown steady main-branch commit growth for years, with no major impact from successive tech hypes. Smaller projects, by contrast, showed much more chaotic growth and tended to stall faster. Based on data through early 2025, the author concludes that publicly available LLMs had not dramatically increased the number of changes merged into main branches of these projects.
The implied question is whether AI helps more when the project is small and flexible, or whether existing scale and process constraints dominate the effect.
