AI can fake software skills, but it has not removed the need to learn the fundamentals

The author agrees with the claim that software was never truly gatekept by cost or access: if you were interested and persistent, the learning resources were always there.
Their argument is that AI has not changed the fundamentals needed to become a software engineer. What it has changed is the ability to perform as one:
- someone can now vibe-code a flashy app
- that does not make them a real software engineer
- AI helps, but it does not replace the need to learn the basics
The post is partly a rebuttal to the idea that AI has removed gatekeeping in software.
