AI-exposed freelance jobs became more price-driven after ChatGPT
A new paper using Upwork data studies how generative AI changed labor market valuation of worker profiles. It finds that in more AI-exposed job categories, human-capital signals became 7.8% less important after ChatGPT, while price became 1.1% more important.
The authors also report that:
- workers with stronger profiles lost part of their demand advantage
- demand shifted toward lower-priced workers
- the pattern is consistent with AI making workers look more interchangeable
The paper argues this is evidence of labor commoditization and has implications for worker incentives to invest in human capital and for labor welfare.
