DeepSeek pauses a second funding round after targeting a $74 billion valuation

Reuters reports that DeepSeek has paused its second funding round before new investment agreements were signed, after targeting a valuation near $74 billion.

The pause comes after DeepSeek raised about $7.4 billion in June. The reported trigger was Liang Wenfeng’s frustration that remarks from a private investor meeting leaked online, including his comments that DeepSeek still relies heavily on Nvidia chips, that China trails the US in AI capability, and that the company will prioritize AGI research and likely keep its strongest models open source.

DeepSeek is also said to be considering a Shanghai STAR Market IPO, suggesting its financing strategy is still active even as this round is delayed.
