AI Safety Researcher Urges Slowing Down Frontier Models Amid Capability Diffusion Risks

In a discussion with Dean Ball and others, Geoffrey Irving suggested that frontier AI labs should slow down their development pace at least partially, as it would significantly aid safety and alignment efforts. He also highlighted a 'capability diffusion' process in AI, where any progress made by a single actor contributes enormously to the advancement of all other actors globally, making risk management across the industry extremely challenging.
