25-company coalition says open-weight models are key to U.S. AI leadership

A coalition of 25 companies — later joined by OpenAI and Google — published a letter arguing that America’s AI lead depends on open-weight models.
The post frames the issue from the perspective of biology and pharma:
- Biology is data-starved, so every efficiency gain in training, inference, and fine-tuning matters.
- Closed APIs limit what drug-discovery teams can ask because of cost.
