Why open models may win: the incentives now push big labs toward openness
willccbb · x · 2026-07-26
Open models tend to win unless the know-how, data, and compute are tightly concentrated inside a company that makes most of its money from tokens, or unless the frontier is effectively tied.
The thread argues that Google, Meta, Microsoft, and even xAI have incentives to go open. It also says OpenAI may eventually do the same if Anthropic pulls ahead while hardware shipments keep improving.
The reply adds a second market force: frontier labs are pushing coding performance partly to commoditize adjacent tools. But that pressure cuts both ways—everyone who is not currently winning the model game wants to commoditize the models instead, which ultimately increases consumer surplus.
