A consultant says they were hired to solve an ML problem for an organization, and after learning the domain, the best fit by far turned out to be a bespoke graphical model—essentially an old-school LDA-style variant that was popular a decade ago.

The catch is social rather than technical: it feels impossible to recommend a solution that sounds that unfashionable, even when it is the right one.
